Google Veo 3: Free AI Video Generation for Everyone

Google Veo 3 is Google DeepMind's video generation model. The current version is Veo 3.1 (announced April 2, 2026), and it's free for all Google accounts through Google Vids. It generates realistic video from text prompts — and it includes native audio generation via Lyria 3.

This is a fundamentally different play than Runway: Google is making AI video generation a commodity. If you have a Google account, you have access.

Where to Access Veo 3.1

For most users — Google Vids: Veo 3.1 is free in Google Vids (Google Workspace). Go to vids.google.com and use the AI video creation features. No additional setup needed.

For YouTube Shorts: Veo 3.1 is integrated into YouTube Shorts creation tools. Generate clips directly when creating content.

For developers — Google AI Studio: API access via aistudio.google.com/models/veo-3. You can call Veo 3 programmatically for automated video generation workflows.

For mobile: Available in the Gemini app on iOS and Android.

Writing Effective Prompts

Video prompts benefit from specificity about motion, camera movement, and environment.

Basic structure:

[scene description] + [camera movement] + [lighting/mood] + [duration hint]

Example:

Veo 3.1 Lite

The cost-effective tier launched March 31, 2026. For developers generating video at scale (product demos, content pipelines), Lite delivers solid output at lower API cost. The full Veo 3.1 model is better for quality-critical work; Lite is better for volume.

What makes Veo 3.1 stand out from most competitors: native audio. Lyria 3, Google's AI music model, integrates directly with Veo to add:
