Midjourney V8: Complete Beginner's Guide to AI Image Generation

Midjourney V8 Alpha generates photorealistic and artistic images in under 10 seconds. Here's how to write prompts, navigate the web app, and get consistent results.

Midjourney V8: Complete Beginner's Guide to AI Image Generation

Midjourney is the go-to AI image generator for anything requiring high aesthetic quality — marketing visuals, brand imagery, concept art, mockups, and more. The current model is V8 Alpha (March 17, 2026): approximately 5x faster than V7, native 2K resolution, and significantly better at following multi-element prompts.

Getting Access

Midjourney is paid-only (no free tier). Subscribe at midjourney.com. You can use either:

  • Web app at midjourney.com (recommended — no Discord required)
  • Discord via the /imagine command in the Midjourney server

The web app is the better experience for most users.

Writing Your First Prompt

In the web app, click Create and type your prompt in the image input. Start simple:

a photograph of a modern office with floor-to-ceiling windows, golden hour lighting, empty desk

Midjourney generates 4 image variations. You can upscale any of them (U1–U4) or generate variations (V1–V4).

How to Write Better Prompts

The more descriptive and specific, the better the output. V8 follows prompts much more closely than previous versions.

Structure: Subject → Style → Lighting → Mood → Camera/Composition

[what you want], [style], [lighting], [mood], [technical details]

Example:

a female entrepreneur at a standing desk, editorial photography style,
soft natural window light, confident and focused, 35mm lens, shallow depth of field

Useful modifiers:

  • Style: editorial photography, product photography, minimalist illustration, 3D render, oil painting
  • Lighting: golden hour, studio lighting, soft natural light, neon glow
  • Quality: --hd for native 2K resolution
  • Aspect ratio: --ar 16:9 for widescreen, --ar 9:16 for vertical

The --hd Parameter (New in V8)

your prompt here --hd

This triggers native 2K resolution output — sharper, higher quality, ready for print or large displays.

Aspect Ratios for Marketing

| Platform | Aspect Ratio | |---|---| | Instagram square | --ar 1:1 | | Instagram Stories / Reels | --ar 9:16 | | YouTube thumbnail | --ar 16:9 | | Twitter/X header | --ar 3:1 | | Facebook cover | --ar 205:78 | | LinkedIn banner | --ar 4:1 |

Getting Consistent Brand Imagery

The biggest challenge with AI image generation is consistency across a set of images. To get consistency:

  1. Save your strongest prompt as a base template and modify from it
  2. Use --style references — run one great image and reference its job ID in future prompts
  3. Build a style guide — write down the exact modifiers that match your brand (lighting, colors, composition language)
  4. Use MidLibrary (midlibrary.io) — a community database of style keywords and their visual output

Niji 7 for Anime-Style Work

Niji 7 (launched January 2026) is a specialized model for anime and illustrated styles. Switch to it in the web app settings or use --niji 7 in Discord. Niji 7 has significantly improved character coherency and fine detail rendering.
